5th and 6th class Microscopy Workshop

Mrs Brennan, Science, STEM No Comments »

On Monday, 5th and 6th class pupils attended a Microscopy Workshop in Sligo IT. Working with microscopes, pupils became familiar with the different parts and functions. They explored how several lenses work together to bend and focus light, making objects appear much bigger than they are. Pupils explored the composition of dust (pieces of dead skin, pollen from plants, fibres from clothing, clay, soil, pet fur and other little organic particles). Pupils also examined the type of insects found under leaves (woodlouse, millipede, worm, snail, spider, earwig etc). The workshop brought science to life and an enjoyable and informative day was had by all.

Scoil Náisiúnta Droim Lias was a hive of scientific activity today! Parents were invited to visit every classroom in the school to watch as some jaw-dropping experiments were conducted by our budding scientists.

Here is an example of the activities that took place in Ms. O’Kelly’s infant room.

nebula (Latin for “cloud” or “fog”; pl. nebulae, nebulæ, or nebulas) is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gases. Originally, nebula was a name for any diffuse astronomical object, including galaxies beyond the Milky Way.

The arrival of the Enormous Pumpkin

English, Green Schools, Mata, Mrs. Gilroy, Science  Tagged No Comments »

Look at our happy faces!!! Last week we had a very special delivery to our school. It took four men to carry the enormous pumpkin to our front door. Emily Rae,Sophie and Mikey’s Mum and Dad organised this special delivery. We got a wonderful surprise when we saw how enormous the pumpkin was. We had great fun estimating and measuring its circumference. Emily Rae gave us a detailed account of the pumpkin’s history. When her family tried to weigh it the weighing scales broke with the high weight level. The Brady’s are going to share some pumpkin sees with us, so we can do some planting with them ,next Spring. Later , in class we wrote stories about the pumpkin. We put all our stories in a booklet, which you can read as you come by our classroom. Thank you to The Brady Family.
