2nd Class working on our Bug Hotel

Geography, Global Citizenship, Green Schools, Mrs. Gilroy No Comments »

We have a bug hotel on the school grounds at the front of our school.

It was created some years ago.

Today, Dolores O’ Conaill along with students of science, Orelia and Sarah came up to us to help us all revamp and enhance the natural habitat for the bugs and mini beasts.

Different children took in suitable materials to help make the habitat attractive for the insects; these included bamboo sticks, leaves, tiles, twigs, cardboard, toilet rolls, and roof tiles.

Dolores shared her knowledge with us on many different mini beasts and their characteristics.

We learned that insects ,plants and animals are all connected to one another. The sun is our primary energy source.

In the afternoon, we all took time to create attractive bug hotel signs.

If you visit our school, you will have a chance to see our creations.

We understand that we all have a duty to look after and care for our environment.

Thank you to our visitors who came along today.

It was a very enjoyable morning.

Fifth and sixth class have been reading a story called ‘The New Girl’ this week. It centres around a Polish family who emigrate to Liverpool. We did some research on Poland which you can read below:

Poland
Poland is a large country in central Europe. It is home to 38,346,279 people. Around 130,000 Poles live in Ireland. This may be due to Poland’s high unemployment numbers and low wages. However since joining the E.U in 2004, Poland’s economy has grown rapidly. Poland borders seven countries: Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Kalinigrad (Russia). It has a coastline with the Baltic Sea at the top of the country which is approximately 500km long. Poland’s terrain includes Northern sandy beaches, Central rolling landscapes and Southern mountains.
Poland’s goverment is a democratic republic and their current president is Andrezej Duda. The Polish currency is Zloty. The capital is Warsaw. The highest mountain in Poland is the Rysy and the longest river is called the Vistula. Some wild animals in Poland are: Bison, Brown Bears, Wild Horses, Wolves, Goats and Wild Boar.
